"Every man should own: a pair of white sneakers (plain like Stan Smiths or Chucks); a pair of brown or burgundy dress shoes; a pair of black ones; a pair of white bucks; chinos (navy and khaki); a great pair of jeans; ten oxford shirts (light blue, some stripes); a lambswool V-neck; two or three sports coats (a navy hopsack, something herringbone for the colder weather); two or three cashmere V-necks; two overcoats (a double-breasted wool one for fall and a classic trench or a car coat); a proper belt; lots of white T-shirts; and ties. It’s your basic wardrobe. I found a fantastic piece from a 1964 magazine which basically lists what you need to have when you come to an Ivy League school. There was an overview picture and it was all Gant shirts. We recreated that shot in our pre-fall holiday campaign. It was really cool. You had to have a lot of shirts with you when you went off to an Ivy League school."
